Funny? not really. Nicely told stories that have aged with a touch of sadness.
Funny in Farsi – A Memoir of Growing up Iranian in America | written by Firoozeh Dumas | published 6/2003 | read 5/2024
The stories in this book skip around Firoozehs life, from her introduction as a non-English speaking student in grade school (with her mother in tow) to her marrying a French man, each story offers an unintended touch of nostalgia for better times. She came here in the 70’s and was welcomed into a small community in Southern California. She recounts how school in Iran was much more challenging than in the US, and how Iranians went from being welcomed to being demonized thanks to a certain US president (and his policies) who shall remain nameless. She grew up in an Iran that was modern and forward thinking where women went to school, and saw her country change.
