Drinking – A Love Story

They’re here, there, and everywhere – functional alcoholics with good jobs and lives of inner turmoil. But still, really good jobs.

Drinking – A Love Story | written by Caroline Knapp | published 5/1996 | read 4/2022

Her story meanders in and out of her life, it’s less a narrative of her life and more a philosophy on alcoholism, a study of the personalities, and their motivations. Her father was a somewhat famous psychologist who in this story comes off kinda creepy. She recounts how much she drank while holding down a job as an editor at a local paper, it’s kinda mind-boggling to me that anyone could drink as much as she did in one day, let alone every day and still manage to be productive. There aren’t a lot of “up” moments in her life, though it gets better when she gets sober.
