The Demonic World: Science as a Candle in the Dark – Carl Sagan

The title is IMO kind of over-dramatic, but who am I to second guess Carl Sagan?

The Demonic World: Science as a Candle in the Dark – Carl Sagan – published 1995 -read 3/24

There is a lot in this book, but the part that got to me was the chapter on witch prosecutions. Not only were women deemed guilty by accusation, before they were tortured and killed they were required to pay for their own torture. It was a really crafty way to steal any meager properties that a woman managed to accumulate in the 1600’s. There were times reading this book when I thought things couldn’t get any worse or stupider and then they did.

While reading this book 4 people started up conversations regarding Sagan – 3 were very nice, one I sensed that even though he said he read Sagan “years ago” he actually didn’t. That’s the thing, ideas provoking conversation. So much of what Sagan wrote about is revelent today, though I doubt Sagan would be happy to hear where we are now. Do I agree with him on everything – no, but that’s ok.
